One of the main emphases of the School is that BCS should be taught as a discrete subject rather than through the medium of the other curricular subjects. The aim is to give each pupil the skills necessary to use IT as a valuable tool in the other subjects.
In the Primary School class teachers introduce pupils to IT. From Year 3 onwards, at least one hour of IT is allocated on the timetable, increasing to two hours each week for those studying for their GCSE examination. Most pupils will sit GCSE Business and Communication Systems at the end of Year 10. Assessment of this course is in three sections:
Unit One is a Key Skills Test, which is 20% of the total mark (1 hour) |
Unit Two is coursework, weighted 40%
Unit Three is and External Exam, 1.5 hours in duration - 40% weighting |
The senior School has a well-equipped computer room and each of the Primary classes has its own computer. The main applications that are taught are: Word Processing, Desk Top Publishing, Website Design, Spreadsheet, Database and Presentation Graphics. In the Primary School each machine is equipped with award winning software which covers most Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 subjects. Furthermore, each department has its subject specific software.
