Diploma Programme Curriculum
Academically, six subjects are studied concurrently: one subject must be selected from each of the six groups, with three subjects taken at Higher Level and three at Standard Level. Students are thus able to explore some subjects in depth and others more broadly - a deliberate balance between specialisation and breadth. The science-oriented student is challenged to learn a foreign language and the humanities-oriented student becomes familiar with more structured procedures.
At the heart of the programme there are three unique core elements:
• Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
• Extended Essay (EE)
• Creativity, Action, Service (CAS)
These compulsory areas encourage students to:
- engage in intellectual dialogue regarding the connections between subjects stimulating critical reflection on knowledge and experience,
- construct a substantive piece of authentic research that acquaints students with independent research and writing skills expected by universities,
- engage in meaningful activities outside of the regular class environment helping students become responsible and compassionate citizens.
The programme is frequently presented in the form of the hexagon diagram.
