The Core Requirements

Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

TOK is an interdisciplinary course that develops critical reasoning and ensures that students reflect on the knowledge and experience they gain both inside and outside the classroom. It challenges students to question the basis of knowledge, to be aware of subjective and ideological biases and to develop the ability to analyse evidence based on objectivity and rational argument. It is a key element in encouraging them to appreciate other perspectives and viewpoints.

Community Action Service (CAS)

CAS recognises the goals of educating the whole person and of fostering responsible, considerate citizens. The programme encourages students to
share their energy and special talents with others: students may, for example, participate in theatre or musical productions, sports and community service activities. Through these activities students develop greater awareness of themselves and the ability to work collaboratively with other people.

Extended Essay (EE)

Each student is required to investigate a topic of special interest, typically in an area related to one of their Higher Level subjects. The essay develops the independent research and writing skills that non-IB students only develop at university. This both fully prepares students for the challenges of university and, as is universally acknowledged by university admission directors, gives IB students a significant advantage in gaining their first-choice place.
