Summer Course

For students wishing to study English intensively for academic purposes, Westbourne School offers a 3 week Summer course where students are taught in small groups and the focus is on preparing them for further academic study in English.
Morning sessions are based around the core skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Contexts will be drawn from everyday situations such as travel and tourism, shopping and leisure. There will be an emphasis on the development of good grammatical structure and vocabulary building.
Afternoon sessions are more project-orientated and focus specifically on the skills required in academic programmes. These will include preparing and making presentations, note taking, formal essay writing and reading for specific purposes (for detail, context, research). The projects are based firmly within different subject areas within a typical UK school curriculum (history, chemistry, business etc). This not only gives students exposure to the key skills required in an English-medium learning environment but also extends technical vocabulary. No prior knowledge is required in the subject areas.
Opportunities are available to take IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge certificates towards the end of the course for additional fees upon request.

Week 1: Monday 15th August – Friday 19th August
Week 2: Monday 22nd August – Friday 26th August
Week 3: Monday 29th August – Friday 2nd September
