Pupils begin the study of French in year 5 and continue until Year 11. At the end of Year 8 they sit the Common Entrance examination and in Year 11 they sit the GCSE examination.
The aims of the course are diverse, the most important being the development of the ability to understand and use French effectively for the purpose of practical communication. It is also intended to encourage a positive attitude to foreign language learning and offer insights into the culture and civilisation of French speaking countries. Pupils are provided with a sound basis of skills, language and attitudes required for further study.
It is believed that these aims are best achieved by the prepositional teaching of grammar, which is at all times reinforced by oral and aural practice.
We also actively encourage the children to participate in a number of visits to France to promote the idea that learning can be fun! Trying new things, out of a classroom environment, accelerated the learning process for many children and gives them the opportunity to re-enforce and develop their skills.
