Geography is taught throughout the school at each of the National Curriculum key stages. Key stage one involves pupils in Years 1 and 2 learning geographical skills and concepts at a very small scale normally based on their home or school environment.
These ideas are further developed at Key stage 2, with years 3-6, but on a larger geographical scale, for example, comparing the local settlement with a contrasting one within the UK and also in a Less Economically Developed Country. Fieldwork is an important part of the syllabus, each group experiencing at least one visit outside the classroom a year.
During years 7 & 8 pupils follow the Common Entrance syllabus, which is very much in line with National Curriculum Key Stage 3. Geographical skills such as global location and O.S. Map work, together with six different themes and an individual fieldwork project are taught throughout the two years.
In years 9-11, the main emphasis is upon preparing the pupils for the GCSE examination. The WJEC mainstream syllabus is studies; this includes topics covering the physical world and the interaction of people within it. Towards the end of year 1O, pupils attend a field study centre within the UK.
