The five classes in the Junior School aim to ground pupils in the basic skills of literacy and numeracy and, to this end, the National Curriculum lays a foundation for the work undertaken, although, as we are not bound by it at the present time, we are free to move beyond its limits where we feel this to be appropriate.
Our commitment to encourage reading is helped by two book fairs each year; these generate substantial funds to help towards the updating and improvement of a wide selection of Reading Schemes. The school's reception teacher acts as an advisor on teaching of phonics to the rest of the primary staff, so that continuity of approach to reading and its development lies at the heart of our teaching.
English, Mathematics and Science in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 and English and Mathematics in Years 3 and 4 are taught by the class teachers, while every effort is made to ensure that the timetable allows for a variety in the day, so that Music, Physical Education or Art and Design and Design Technology lessons appear at least twice a week.
All National Curriculum subjects, except Welsh, are taught in the Primary School. One distinctive feature is that, where possible, the foundation subjects are taught by the teachers who have considerable expertise in their subjects in the age range 5 to 11; this means, for example, that the school's P.E., Music or Art teachers are involved with the youngest pupils, so that appropriate skills are imparted from an early age, thus helping to give an all round education to pupils from the outset.
All classes, including the Nursery, have a computer, as does the primary library and art room. To introduce pupils to the senior school, primary P.E. lessons take place in the gymnasium, and Years 3 and 4 have Information Technology lessons in the senior computer room. Local facilities such as Techniquest, the National Museum of Wales and Cardiff Bay and the local countryside are used to reinforce teaching. Links with the Police, Fire Service and so on are maintained to give pupils an introduction to community values.
Parents are encouraged to keep in regular contact with the teachers of their children and indeed, at the end of the school day, the head teacher and class teachers make themselves available to parents.
