Physical Education is taught throughout the school and generally follows the National Curriculum guidelines, however with the time availability and subject specific staff it is possible to spend more time on individual areas often exceeding the requirements for the key stages. Health related fitness is also integrated into the subject throughout the year groups. Concepts covered will include fitness, body conditioning, nutrition, flexibility and components of a healthy life style.
In the Junior School the concern is to encourage all round development by a combination of confidence building and co-ordination activities. Years 1 and 2 swim once a week for the autumn and spring terms while the rest of the school swim just in the autumn term. Other activities included are cross-country, gymnastics, athletics activities and ball games that lead onto games such as mini rugby, football, netball, hockey, rounders and cricket.
During the summer months the concentration is on cricket and athletics with softball and rounders as additional striking and ball activities. The school has an annual cross-country run and athletics sports day with the emphasis on participation and enjoyment.
In years 5-11, the winter syllabus includes football, hockey, rugby and netball as well as cross-country where pupils take part in local championships. Swimming, dance and gymnastics are also covered.
During the summer months, the emphasis is placed on athletics, cricket, rounders, softball and tennis.
There are annual sports days for both the junior and the senior school held at Leckwith athletic stadium.
The school also offers the opportunity to follow a GCSE course in Physical Education covering further activities and technical aspects of Sport and Fitness.
A number of additional extra curricular activities are also available and pursued; these include a running club, fencing, weight training and tennis.
