Religious Studies is taught from Reception through to the end of Year 10, as a discrete subject. The curriculum, at Key Stages 2 and 3, is geared towards preparing pupils for the Common Entrance examination at 13 plus.
This is a largely Bible based course, which has been recently revised to include a progressive study of world religions. Pupils gain an opportunity to study a local Church first and through one of the coursework options offered in this syllabus. Opportunity to learn about other faiths is also provided throughout these Key Stages.
Pupils in Year 10 will sit a GCSE examination. The course will include the study of such elements as modern Christian practice, doctrine, and ethics. Some elements of world religions will also be covered.
Pupils are encouraged to develop an enquiring, critical and sympathetic approach to the study of religion, both in its corporate and its individual expression, and to identify and explore questions about the meaning of life, from the perspective of religious traditions. The syllabus is designed to promote thought and discussion among pupils on the practical matters that arise out of the curriculum content, e.g., the keeping of promises, kindness, loyalty, honesty, patience etc.
