Founded in 1896, Westbourne School and its Prep Department have won the highest praise possible from the national inspectorate, Principal of Westbourne School, Dr Gerard Griffiths reflects on his reaction to the independant audit report.
I was once told that it is embarrassing to be reminded how fantastic you are – do not believe anyone who says this!
The recent ESTYN inspection report for Westbourne School graded the school as Excellent in all FIVE key categories and reminded me in every sentence just how high our standards are, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at Westbourne for their continued commitment to delivering excellence across the board.
When all your efforts are both recognised and applauded by complete strangers, it is not only official confirmation that you are doing the right things, but an incredibly secure platform on which the entire school community can build and move forward further.
The standards of all our pupils, from Nursery to the Sixth form, have always been outstanding – in literacy, numeracy, GCSEs and IB Diploma:
“The standards achieved by pupils at Westbourne School are extremely high and pupils with English as an additional language make particularly good progress”
“In 2017, all pupils in the sixth form passed the IB Diploma. Of these, 80% achieved above the world average of 30 points while 13% achieved more than 40 points.”
However, it was particularly pleasing that the school’s long-term planning and implementation was recognised as exemplar. We pride ourselves on ensuring that every pupil’s needs are met and that the entire school community has confidence in the leadership.
“Estyn will invite the school to prepare case studies on its work in relation to the support provided to pupils with English as an additional language and the approach to succession planning taken by the proprietor to ensure a smooth transition in the change to the school’s senior leadership”
We believe that this statement spoke volumes for the direction and decisions the school has made at every level in recent years – and at the same time understand the incredibly high standards we have achieved in attaining Excellent in every category.
For me personally, this is an excellent start to my tenure as school Principal, and I want this to be the opportunity for us all at Westbourne to set ourselves even higher targets for the future.
