This week, Year 11 and Pre-IB pupils from our Senior School enjoyed an IB Taster Day to experience a day in the life of Westbourne IB Sixth Form students.
Our Principal, Dr Griffiths, was joined by Head of Sixth Form Ms Phillips and our IB subject leaders to discuss the transition from GCSE, what the IB Diploma entails and university applications. The students took part in taster lessons including Languages, Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Computer Science, experiencing the independence that comes with joining our leading IB Sixth Form.
We believe that the IB Diploma Programme provides students with a clear advantage over their A Level peers in both university applications and future careers. Awarded IB Diploma School of the Year 2019, IB Sixth Form at Westbourne is an immersive experience in academic excellence.
The IB aims to support students to develop a wide range of skills and abilities to take on the challenges they will face in the future. IB students study a programme designed to develop breadth through the study of six key areas including English, Mathematics, a Science, a Humanities subject, a Language and a Creative Arts subject.
As well as developing a broad range of skills, the programme enables students to capitalise on their strengths, studying three subjects to Higher Level, with three to Standard Level, creating opportunities to develop a second language, explore creative subjects and expand humanities and scientific knowledge.
A report by the Higher Education Statistics Agency has found that in the UK, not only are IB students more likely to go to a top 20 ranked university, they are also more likely to achieve a first-class degree and be at the top of their university class.
The Extended Essay, in particular, gives students a tremendous advantage when applying to university by demonstrating an ability to research and write a 4000-word university-style essay.
