High-level Maths challenges

Students from our IB Sixth Form recently took part in a programme of high-level academic competitions run by the UK Mathematics Trust(link is external), including the Senior Maths Challenge and the Maths Olympiad for Girls. External competitions and olympiads encourage our students to test and further extend the skills and knowledge they are gaining during their IB studies, giving them the edge over their peers at other schools.

Founded in 1996, the trust aims to advance the education of young people in mathematics by hosting a range of competitions both in the UK and internationally. Each challenge promotes advanced mathematical skills including problem-solving and teamwork.

Maths Olympiad for Girls

The Maths Olympiad for Girls is a unique challenge for girls and young women across the UK, and aims to support girls in Maths both at school and in their future careers – a focus that is extremely important to us at Westbourne. The competition consists of five questions and students can receive up to ten marks in total.

Congratulations to this year’s participants: Huyen, who achieved an award for Distinction, Noemie for Merit and Sophie for Participation.

Senior Maths Challenge

The Senior Maths Challenge is a 90-minute, multiple choice challenge aimed at those students who love problem-solving. The top scoring 66% of students taking part receive a Bronze, Silver or Gold Award.

Congratulations to Nathaniel, Oscar, Guilherme and Huyen who were awarded Gold, Emilia, Anson, Sophie and Thomas who achieved Silver, Louis, Dexi, XiangJun, Taonga, Dardi, Kalista and Andrea who secured Bronze and Minnie and Jakub for Participation.
