This week, we were delighted to welcome back Dr Jurkowska, Senior Lecturer in the Division of Biomedicine at Cardiff University, and a specialist in the human lungs and lung diseases.
Dr Jurkowska spoke to IB students about the myriad career opportunities in the sciences, especially in bioscience and scientific research, as well as explaining more about her research into the effects of external pollutants on lung cells, including research into different drugs and how they can treat and fight different lung diseases.
The students were enthralled to find out more about how exciting and wide-ranging a career in the sciences can be, both in academia and as a professional working in the industry, and were interested to discuss the routes to securing a career in a top scientific sector.
In the lead-up to International Day of Women and Girls in Science on 11th February, Dr Jurkowska also took time to focus on the importance of encouraging more girls to embark on careers in STEM.
It was inspiring for our female students to meet such a successful woman making a significant impact in the field, and to be able to ask questions about Dr Jurkowska’s own academic background and career first-hand.
