A Different Perspective
On Thursday 15th May 2014, Year 1 and Year 2 visited The Senydd, Cardiff Bay. The children went around the Jewish Way of Life Exhibition to learn about Judaism and Jewish People.
The pupils were taught lots of things about Jewish people and were shown plenty of artefacts that reflected Jewish life.
The children took great interest in learning about the Shabbat. A table had been set up in the middle of the exhibition to represent a typical table in a Jewish home at Shabbat. Shabbat begins at dusk on Friday and ends at nightfall on Saturday. The start of Shabbat is marked by lighting 2 candles and reciting a blessing over them. Friday evening is a special time when family and friends eat together and talk about the week’s events. For the Shabbat meal, the table is laid with a white tablecloth and talk about the week’s events. For the Shabbat meal, the table is laid with a white tablecloth and the family’s best china. The pupils were delighted when they were alllowed to sit at the table and imagine how it would be like in real life.
The guides were keen for the children to learn as much as possible about how Jewish people live. In groups the children moved around each exhibit and the guides explained what everything was. The pupils were also given the opportunity to ask plenty of questions.
After the exhibition, we all went to the Norweigan Church and had a drink and an ice-cream. This was an excellent end to a fascinating visit.
