An international academic competition

The World Scholar’s Cup is an international academic competition in which teams of students from all around the world compete in debates, quizzes and extended writing activities for a chance to lift the coveted Cup at the final at Yale University. Over 15000 students from more than 65 countries begin the competition each year, taking part in 4 events in each round: analytical questions in the Scholar’s Bowl, a collaborative writing exercise, the general knowledge multiple choice Scholar’s Challenge and a fierce Team Debate round.

This year, 3 teams of Westbourne Senior School students from Year 8 stepped up to the challenge of the regional Cardiff Round at Howell’s School in Llandaff. The students were a credit to the school and gained praise from teachers from other schools for their sportsmanship and excellent behaviour in the debates.

The teams performed splendidly, with all three qualifying for the next round in London later this year. Team 522 (Harsh, Piotr and Molly) came 3rd overall in the Team Debate and first in the Team Bowl competition, winning a trophy for the school – a tremendous achievement!
